Submitting your website to web directories manually is a tedious and time-consuming process, but it is not impossible and it can be rewarding to those who are willing to take pains.
In this article, we will discuss the steps in the manual submission of websites to web directories to enhance their web presence and to improve their rankings in the search engines.
1. Make a list of your favorite web directories.
The first thing that you need to do is to determine which web directories you want to submit your website to. If you are not familiar with them, you can do a search in Google with the phrase “top website directories” and you will be taken to a page where your search phrase is mentioned.
Avoid getting confused with the sites by saving the list in a spreadsheet together with their page ranks. This can help you to avoid submitting in a single directory more than once.
2. Submit only to directories that are SEO-friendly.
To check if your target web directory is search engine friendly, open its website and check its page source by doing a right click then click on the ‘View Page Source’ option. Once you have the page source, search for the ‘noindex’ or ‘nofollow’ terms in the code with the help of CTRL F utility. If these terms exist in the page source, you don’t need to submit your website to that web directory because sites that have these terms are not search engine friendly.
Search engine friendly web directories are those that appear in the typical HTML format. Any page source which is not presented in HTML format is not search engine friendly. Search engines don’t follow them. Therefore, you don’t need to submit your site to those directories.
3. Pick the right category for your site.
You can maximize the potential of web directories in exposing your website by selecting the most appropriate category that your site belongs to. Most web directories have strict guidelines and they employ humans to check on the relevancy of your submissions. Failure to submit to the appropriate categories can lead to the rejection of your website. If you cannot find an appropriate category for your site, skip that directory and move on the next.
4. Submit your website.
4.1 Go to the homepage of the directory and click on the “Suggest a Site,” “Submit a Site” or any related terms used by the directory for site submission.
4.2 After clicking on “Submit a Site,” you will be taken to the category page where you will be made to choose the category for your website.
After choosing your category, you will be redirected to a submission form where the submission rules and guidelines are also presented.
Each web directory has its own set of submission procedures and guidelines. You should take time to read and understand them to avoid rejection.
4.3 Choose a directory listing option for your submission. You have two directory listing options to choose from, one is free while the other is a paid listing with reciprocal linking options.
If you want fast approval of your submission, you can choose the paid listing option, but if you’re not in a hurry, you can opt for the free directory submission option without the reciprocal linking option.
4.4 Complete the submission form with all the basic details of your site. These include keywords, your email address (not the free account given by Google, Yahoo or Hotmail), site description and its URL.
5. Final Submission
Your final step is to type the captcha code required by the web directory. This is to verify that the site is submitted by a human.
After entering the verification code, click on “Submit” and you are done with your web directory submission process.
