Dos and Don’ts of Search Engine Optimization

The primary purpose of implementing search engine optimization is to make your content easily seen by search engines. Web content that perform well with search engines often land at the top of the search engine results pages when web users search for it with related keywords.

Since SEO is a very important aspect of driving traffic, many tactics have been developed to make websites and web pages rank high in the search engines. Unfortunately, not all of them are acceptable and can lead to the banning or penalizing of your website.

Here are the most common dos and don’ts of search engine optimization:

    Dos

    1. Cascading Style Sheets or CSS

CSS is used to separate style (colors, fonts, layout, etc.) from content.

With CSS, designers and users can create style sheets that define how different elements, such as headers and links, appear. The CSS file will help your site load quickly and provide a consistent look and feel throughout the website.

    2. Titles

The use of unique page titles throughout a website can help to various key phrases that can enhance the site’s search-friendliness.

    3. Related Links

Links from related sites can help to increase your site’s popularity in the eyes of the search engine spiders. Search engines see links from related sites as “votes.” This is how search engines value links.

    4. Anchor Text

Search engines consider the use of anchor text as natural linking. Make your web pages search engine friendly by using a variety of phrases to link to a site.

    5. Fresh Content

Always update your site with fresh content. Search engines love to spider websites that are frequently and regularly updated.

    8. Stick to a Theme

The content of your web pages should relate to a single main theme. The use of related key phrases on various web pages can help to give your site a good ranking in the search engines.

    Don’ts

    1. Keyword Stuffing

There are many ways to stuff web pages with keywords and all of these can be detected by modern search engines. You should avoid keyword stuffing as it can result in your site getting banned by search engines.

    2. Cloaking

It is a SEO technique in which the content presented to the search engine spider is different from the one presented to the user’s browser.

Cloaking is hard to detect. But once your site is banned for cloaking, you will find it hard to activate it again.

    3. Don’t Sacrifice Quality for Optimization

SEO is an essential part traffic generation, but you can’t sacrifice quality content to accommodate it. You implement SEO to allow search engines to find your site for people to see and open. Creating content for search engines is not a guarantee for traffic or sales.

    4. Spamming

Spamming is a no-no anywhere on the web. You should not implement it anywhere on your site.
