Foods for Diabetics

Sometimes diabetics wonder what is left for them to eat after speaking with their doctor. They are told to watch carbohydrates, limit fat to ward of cholesterol, and watch salt for high blood pressure. All of that advice is very important for a diabetic to follow because many diabetics have high blood pressure and high cholesterol problems. Leaving any of these problems unchecked can lead to heart problems. Heart problems are the cause of death for many diabetics, so you should take it seriously. So, what’s left to eat?

Here are some suggestions for diabetics:

Vegetables: Green leafy vegetables such as salad and spinach, collard and mustard greens, and kale. Green beansSquash and zucchiniBroccoli and cauliflowerCucumber and celerySnap peas and asparagus

Meats: TurkeyChickenPork (in moderation)

Fruits: StrawberriesBlueberriesCantaloupe

Snack suggestions: Low fat peanut butter and celery or cucumberBerries and low fat creamLow fat cheese

This is by no means and
exhaustive list of foods left for diabetics to eat. If you do not have cholesterol or blood pressure problems you can eat cheese, other meats, and snacks like pork rinds. The best ways to figure out what to eat is talk with your doctor and use your glucose meter. A glucose meter is the diabetic’s best friend. It will tell you what foods do and do not make your blood sugar rise.

Also, if you get your A1C into the normal range you may be able to add whole grains back into your diet. It’s advisable to wait a while after achieving optimal results to give your body time to get used to it, and keep blood sugar levels normalized.

Don’t give up when diagnosed with diabetes. It is possible to still enjoy eating. You just have to make adjustments in the types of foods you eat. Get a guide that list the fat, carbohydrate, and sodium content of foods and pick your favorite foods from the best choices. It helps to keep in mind the health benefits of eating correctly with diabetes. If you fail to correct your diet and your diabetes progresses, dire consequences can follow. Knowing that eating bad can really kill you is a great incentive to pick the correct foods!

This was very informative because I may have diabetes as my glucose is 331 as a result of my annual lab work and liver count was very high also but cholesterol was low.

I would say you definitely have diabetes. Are you going back to the doctor very soon? You need to stay on top of this. Readings that high cause organ damage.

I hope you get it under control soon. I wish you all the best.
