It is important & necessary for one to take good care of his back. With a healthy back, you will be sure to enjoy the many fun activities there is to do that involves some physical action. Having your back injured however, will limit you with the type of activities you can do. And if you are one of the many who have had their backs injured, you can say goodbye to an action packed life.
What is perhaps commonly a problem by many adults is lower back pain or LBP. LBP can be categorized into either chronic or acute. It can be considered chronic if yours shows symptoms of 2 months and above – and acute if it has only been a month or less.
Other back and spine problems include herniated disc, degenerative disc, spondylolysis, sprains and strains. Individuals will experience various degrees of pain – depending on the current condition, how bad the injury is, the location of the injury, etc. Some will feel pain even by just sitting down or by laying in bed – it is a case-to-case basis which your doctor can advise you on the extent of your back problem and how to address it medically.
Having back & spine problems will indeed be difficult – physically, mentally, emotionally and psychologically. Aside from not being able to do what you might want to – other aspects of your life get affected as well. Like in your work – if yours is one that requires some good amount of physical movements, then you may have to be very extra careful not to re-injure yourself or at worst – increase the degree of injury you currently have.
And if you are one who loves to do high impact exercises or one who loves extreme sports – you may have to think twice if you still want to subject your body to such. You may have to lower the intensity a bit, and make adjustments in consideration with your current back & spine issues. Only with the go signal of your doctor should you indulge yourself back to such highly physical activities you love. But even so, you should give it the extra care and attention it needs.
You must also be proactive in aiming for good health. This leads you towards a more active lifestyle – one that keeps your muscles and joints moving. Exercising will burn off those unwanted fats, keeping your weight in control. Ideal exercises include swimming, walking and bicycling. You must understand that by carrying with you such excess baggage around your waist, you will be subjecting your back to unnecessary stress.
Being overweight will be a problem as you do certain movements as bending, picking up things on the floor or carrying heavy weights with your hands – as the extra pounds of your body will be an added weight to the things you carry. It is thus to your benefit to strive for your ideal weight.
Aside from regular exercise, you should also consider improving your diet to a healthier one. Fruits and vegetables will help you in your quest towards a leaner body. You should avoid eating too much – and in eating the wrong kinds of food. Bad fats should ideally be avoided or at least kept to a minimum. Sweets and refined foods should also be controlled. Healthy foods combined with an active lifestyle will effectively help you control your weight – these, with the hope of preventing injury to your back and spine caused by your obesity.
Another important thing to watch out for to prevent back & spine injuries is by knowing how to keep a proper posture in sitting, standing and in some basic movements. Especially during lifting, one must ensure that he is not using his back – instead, the technique should be to bend his knees during the lift and getting his strength from it.
You should not take your back for granted. You must avoid activities and movements that may injure your back. Eating the right food is also essential. Being healthy and lean will also help in your aim for an injury-free back.
