Proactively Preventing Cold and Flu

  By WC Editor

Cold and flu are diseases caused by a virus.  These will cause one to have a runny nose, cough, itchy throat, exhaustion, headache and some will have fever.  Such are indeed a hindrance in your daily activities.  Especially at work, you will not be able to concentrate well.  It is thus best to get yourself checked up by your doctor so that you will know the right medications to take.

A cold is said to be a mild case of flu. Both will give off the same symptoms, except that for a flu – you may experience these severely.  With a flu, the symptoms come quickly and your fever will be higher as compared to having only a cold. Colds will only usually raise your body temperature on an average of 2 degrees.

Cold and flu are contagious.  These are spread through touch or through the air.  With a physical contact with someone having a cold or flu - or by having inhaled droplets of the virus in the air – you may just get yourself the same disease.

You cure cold and flu by resting in bed and making sure you are getting your immune system stronger.  There are medicines to fight off the symptoms, but these have to be taken appropriately.  You have to consult your doctor with the right medications for your case.  For example, don’t take medicines to stop your coughing – if you are coughing up mucus.  Your body has to get rid of the mucus.

Other medicines usually taken when one has cold and flu include antihistamines, expectorants, oral & nasal decongestants and analgesics.  Antihistamines address allergic reactions that cause a runny nose.  Expectorants facilitate the ridding of mucus.  Oral and nasal decongestants shrink the nasal passages and clear your system of congestion. One should however always consult a physician so that you will be sure you are using the right medications.

There are things you can do to combat cold and flu in the future.  You should consider eating nutritious food so that your body will get all the vitamins and minerals it needs.  Sometimes, you need to supplement with these especially if you know you are not getting a balanced diet. And yet, like everything else, anything taken more than is necessary will be bad for you – thus make sure you are supplementing yourself with the right nutrients.

A good way to go for you is to go for fruits and vegetables.  You will get a lot out of eating these types of foods.  Give up on junk foods and sodas – you will just be giving your body more calories without the right nutrients.  And if you are a quite an alcohol drinker, it may be time to go slow at it.

Then there is the exercise part of the equation to combat cold and flu.  With regular exercise, you are making your heart stronger.  This results to a good circulation of the blood throughout your body.  With this, you are sure the nutrients in the blood will be distributed to all parts of the body.

A regular exercise program has shown to increase one’s immune system – and thus will be your primary weapon in the fight against cold and flu.  Sure you might still catch a virus and may have a cold or a flu – yet you will exhibit less severe symptoms and will recover more quickly.

Further steps you can take to prevent cold and flu include subscribing to proper personal hygiene, taking flu vaccines, drinking sufficient amount of water, avoiding alcohol and giving up smoking. All these will help in your fight against cold and flu.  These will decrease your chances of catching the virus – and even if you do, your body will be able to combat it well.  Your body will be in a much better state to take care of itself and recover well.
